题目：Sequential Patterns of Collaboration and Acquisition:How Do They Matter for Innovation in China?

摘要：Collaboration and acquisition in firm innovation is debated widely, but management of the impact of sequential patterns is neglected. Based on a panel dataset of Chinese firms, this paper identifies four patterns of sequential collaborative and acquisitive behaviours using optimal matching and cluster analysis. Innovation outcomes of these patterns differ depending on the timing, frequency and implementation of the activities. It finds that (1) firms practising both collaboration and acquisition, and those insisting in collaboration perform better than firms using other patterns. (2) The busiest firm may not achieve the best innovation outcome. An inverted U-shaped linkage between innovation performance and the number of collaboration is evident. (3) Collaboration produces significantly positive impact for up to 3 years, while acquisition has negative effects in the first two years. (4) Collaboration after acquisition has a positive innovation effect in the short-run; while acquisition after collaboration produces greater innovation in the long-run.
